Adoption Update: Cambie’s Story

My husband and I were looking for the right rescue dog for us for the past year and then came across the Boston Terrier Rescue Canada site. We fell in love with Bambi’s (now “Cambie”) story – a sweet, calm, adult Pug/Boston mix who lived in Calgary and was recovering from a major kidney stone surgery. I literally filled out the application right after I read the story and was thrilled that BTRC got back to us so promptly.

What was amazing to us was how organized the BTRC was and how responsive the organization was with questions and follow-up. I also had several calls with Cambie’s foster mom, Jen, who provided a lot of detail about Cambie’s situation. Yes, Cambie was recovering from surgery, but she still had a full life ahead of her. She met my three main criteria for our dog – calm, friendly, and gets along with my cat. We had decided to go ahead with the adoption after the calls.

So off to Calgary I went in early June. Jen and Cambie came to meet me at the airport as soon as I landed. I have never owned a dog before, let alone bring one home on a plane, so I was a bit nervous. But the nervousness subsided when I saw that Jen had everything organized for me. We spent the day getting to know Cambie and went to the pet store to find her favourite foods and to find the right crate for the flight. Jen even saw us off at the airport to ensure that the transportation process went smoothly.

Arriving home in Vancouver was exciting. My husband picked us at the airport to meet our newly adopted dog. We named her “Cambie” after the Cambie Street bridge in our neighbourhood – and also because she already responded to “Bambi” 😉

We took Cambie for a walk on the seawall right after we arrived home. I couldn’t believe what a giant smile she had. The look on her face when she looked out on the water just made my heart melt.

A couple weeks later, I updated the BTRC on Cambie’s progress. She had adjusted to a regular eating/walking/potty schedule and the great part was that my anti-social cat, Charlie, was really warming up to her. It has been wonderful watching those two get to know each other around the house. Charlie likes to sneak up on Cambie while she’s sleeping just for a reaction. Cambie has never chased Charlie even once.

Thank you, BTRC and Jen for giving us such a wonderful addition to our family! We couldn’t be happier with Cambie.
