Ah! To be Twooie!

A beautiful update from Twooie’s permanent foster family.

With her fringed red scarf tied jauntily around her neck, this elegant grande dame of a Boston is more than ready for her close up, Mr. DeMille. She is our perennial poster girl on how to age with dignity and grace. And she has enriched our lives in ways we could never have imagined.

When Twooie arrived at BTRC in February 2011, she was a 12-year-old Boston beauty with a baseball-sized mast cell tumour on her left hind leg, which was swiftly removed. Given her cancer diagnosis and advanced age, it was decided that Twooie would be placed as a permanent foster in BTRC’s Set for Life program.

Twooie remains a remarkable little dog, personifying everything we love and cherish about this remarkable breed. She is confident and friendly, and good with everyone she meets – people of all ages, as well as cats and other dogs. Now, at the distinguished age of 14, her health is declining, and although she’s slowing down, she hasn’t stopped. In fact, she’s doing well, wonderfully well. Medications and supplements dull her aches and pains. She thrives on her top quality diet, snoozes in her cozy dog bed by the fireplace, and patters up the pet stairs to both the couch and our bed.

Cleaning up the occasional accident is nothing compared to the joy she brings us.

In keeping with their commitment to the Set for Life program, BTRC has ensured that all of Twooie’s needs, medical and otherwise, are met. Recently, she developed an eye ulcer, a common occurrence in Bostons. Because her eye meds must be administered every two hours (and because we’re at work), Twooie has been made an “honorary” member of the staff at Mountain Vista Veterinary Hospital. Her duties? “Working” behind the front counter. Translation? Trying to score treats and convincing her co-workers that they would be more productive if she sat on their laps.

To complement the wonderful, traditional vet care she receives at Mountain Vista, Dr. Kinoshita has generously donated her time to treating Twooie with Chinese medicine and acupuncture.

Despite her antics and her courage, Twooie has taught us to count our time with her in days. Each day made all the more memorable simply because she’s still with us. Without the empathy and generosity of BTRC, none of this would have been possible. They have allowed this beautiful Boston to shine in her golden years and have given our family the honour of basking in her glow.

Since it’s the season for kind thoughts and generous giving, please consider buying a TAX DEDUCTIBLE ornament for BTRC’s Holiday Tree, so that other “Twooies” may have the chance to share their own golden years with families as fortunate as ours.
