Adoption Update: Loca!

An update from Loca’s forever family!

This update is long overdue. Last August Wade and I added a new addition to our home, we adopted Loca (formerly known as Roxie). Shortly after we got her and grew to know her, we decided to change her name. The name Loca seemed to suit her as it summed her up in one word, crazy. Crazy full of energy and a larger than life personality. It’s like she seemed to agree because she answered to this new name flawlessly, with no training at all.

It was an adjustment in the beginning as our other Boston, Chica had been the only dog in the household for four years. But the two eventually worked out the pecking order and now they are typical siblings. They play, chase and tease each other with toys, and in the next minute they are cuddled up on the couch together. Loca has taken on the little sister role, always wanting to tag along and be with her older sibling. While Chica has settled into the older sister role, keeping Loca in line and reminding her how to behave from time to time.

When Loca came to us she recently had surgery for a subluxed patella. She often limped and skipped when walking. She rarely does this now. I believe her daily walks have helped strengthen and heal her leg. She also had some manners and behavior issues. We immediately enrolled her into a manners class, which she successfully graduated! She listens very well and is a quick learner. She still has some dog aggression issues, however she is much better than she was and we believe with patience and hard work this is something she will eventually overcome.

During the process of adopting Loca, we were told the dog we adopted would not be the same dog months from now. The volunteer had explained that a rescue dog doesn’t really show their true personality until months later when they feel secure and at home. This couldn’t be more true with Loca. In the beginning she couldn’t relax, she was always on edge. Her personality seemed flat at times and she seemed sad. Now that she has settled into the family and feels at home, this little clown has shown her true colours. There isn’t a day that goes by that she doesn’t make us laugh. From the moment she wakes us up with kisses to mealtime when she does what we call her “happy dance”. This little girl is the biggest snuggle bug, even more so than Chica!

Loca loves spending the day surveying the neighborhood from her window perch, snoozing on her favourite pillow on “her” spot on the couch, going for long walks and bike rides through the trails near our house, and of course goofing off with her sister. Neither one of us could picture our lives without her, it’s like she was meant for us. Thank you BTRC!
