Frankie was adopted on December 13, 2023.
One year, two months, three weeks, and two days. That’s how long Frankie was in foster care.
We are overjoyed to announce that Frankie’s time in rescue has ended. The dream he shared with Santa Paws has come true. That’s right… FRANKIE HAS BEEN ADOPTED!
Frankie’s BTRC journey began when he was given away for free in a parking lot. Now he spends his days being spoiled and his nights all tucked up in bed with his new human.
Frankie’s family is over the moon with their new addition. At first his mom’s shadow, with the help of his BT sister Dolce and his feline sister Sushi, Frankie is becoming more confident every day. And as he feels more and more at home, his playful and affectionate personality has the chance to shine through.
Thank you to Frankie’s family for seeing what a good boy he is. Frankie finally has the forever family he truly deserves. ❤

Dear Santa Paws,
It’s me, Frankie. I know that you’re supposed to already know if I’ve been good or bad, but just in case, I’ve been GOOD for goodness sake! I’ve been working so hard to be a REALLY good boy this year, so I should probably be on your SOOPER NICE list.
I’ve been away at school for 10 months now. I didn’t know what to expect when I arrived so I was nervous and a bit anxious, but my teachers are kind and they understand me, and know how to motivate me to be the bestest I can be.
So I like it here fine. I get lots of treats, have lots of space to run around and play, and my teachers are fun. But just like the hooman students, I wish I could go home for the holidays.
I have so much love to give. Disney said that “A dream is a wish that your heart makes”. And I dream about it every night.
No matter where I might spend Christmas Eve, I know you can find me. I would love you to bring me some more treats…and hmmm…maybe another cozy blanket because that white, cold stuff is coming soon. And please help all my BTRC friends live their best life too just like BTRC helped me.

Frankie is celebrating his second Christmas with BTRC. And his wish remains the same – a forever family to call his own. Please don’t tell, but it’s looking like his dream may just be coming true. Stay tuned for an update!
Frankie has made a good buddy at school–and it looks like they’ve almost perfected their team work when scoping out the yard! In his original foster home, Frankie got along well with the resident dog, a small female, and also made friends with a similarly sized poodle, so we know with proper introductions he can make canine connections with small sized dogs. He’s still not a big fan of big dogs though. Although a home with no other dogs would likely be his preference, another small laid-back pooch and your commitment to slow introductions just might make living with a canine companion possible for our fun-loving Frankie!

First things first.
What is Foster-to-Adopt?
BTRC is looking for a FOREVER home for this dog. The difference from a regular adoption is that, for the time being, the dog remains as a BTRC foster.
WHY?
- Vetting Needed: With the current challenges in booking appointments, that might be as far as a month or two away. Those extra weeks would be much better spent getting settled in a forever home. As BTRC pays the veterinary bill, the dog officially remains a foster until the required medical care is completed.
- Training Needed: While a foster home can introduce the basics, and get a dog started on a plan to address unwanted behaviours, the best way to success is through the teamwork of dog and adopter. Training is a fantastic way to bond with your new dog, and a large part of behavioural rehab focuses on teaching the human too! Again, BTRC offers support and covers the financial cost, so the dog remains a BTRC foster until training courses are completed.
FRANKIE IS LOOKING
FOR HIS NEW HOME!
Frankie is a 7-year-old neutered male Boston Terrier mix with a distinctive greyish brindle coat and white-tipped tail. At 15 lbs., he’s a portable pup and the perfect lap dog.
Frankie is currently staying in a board and train facility, where a professional trainer has been working with him using positive training methods to correct some not-so-desirable behaviours. When Frankie first arrived in February, he was anxious and in an almost constant state of hyperarousal. Frankie has been working very hard on controlling his reaction to different stimuli and we are pleased to share that he has made significant improvements — he is much calmer, enjoys the outdoors, listens to commands, is learning that it’s okay to have time to himself, and has is far less reactive to other dogs. He even shares his spaces civilly with the resident cat!
Frankie needs a calm and relaxed home, ideally with no other dogs or young children. The less busy the environment, the more quickly Frankie will become comfortable in his new space. He enjoys going for walks, running around, and playing so a fenced-in backyard would be perfect. Frankie’s not a candidate for a townhouse or multiple family dwelling as he can be vocal when left on his own. This too has seen great improvement, but he would still do much better, and be much happier, with someone who is retired or works from home. Frankie is sweet-natured, super affectionate and cuddly and wants so much to please his human.
To help smooth Frankie’s transition to his new home, six complimentary training sessions will be offered at Frankie’s current school, located close to Peterborough, ON. This training is strongly recommended so that the techniques that have brought Frankie so far can be shared to help ensure continued success in his new home. Without a commitment to Frankie’s training, unwanted behaviours could resurface.
If Frankie’s eventual home is not within a reasonable distance of his current trainer, BTRC will ensure that alternative and appropriate training is offered along with the support of other experienced rescue volunteers.
Set to visit the vet for his annual check-up shortly, Frankie will be fully updated on all routine veterinary care before moving to his new home.
Frankie is a deserving dog who needs someone to recognize that he truly is a diamond in the ruff! With that special someone who is patient and dedicated to Frankie’s success, and who will consistently reinforce all that Frankie has learned with positive training methods, we know that Frankie can be a fantastic companion!

Guess who is off to school?
We were fortunate to find Frankie an available spot in a board and train that shares BTRC’s positive reinforcement training philosophy. He’ll get a professional assessment and will work on changing inappropriate behaviours into ‘good boi’ ones.

Full Recovery for Frankie
After a month of Vitamin K1 treatment, to counteract the type of toxin he ingested, Frankie has made a complete recovery. Bloodwork performed at intervals during the month confirmed he shows no lasting effects.Considering the ‘ruff’ month he had, Frankie decided to recover and recharge by accompanying his foster family on a holiday trip to the sunny south. Not to worry, arrangements were made in advance with a local veterinarian, and with Santa Paws, of course, who delivered Frankie’s presents to the Sunshine State. Once back in Canada, Frankie will have his second dental surgery to remove the last of his troublesome teeth. Frankie sends everyone his “warmest” holiday wishes!

On November 26, Frankie ingested something toxic. The circumstances were an unfortunate accident, but the situation was life-threatening. Frankie required immediate emergency veterinary treatment and a stay in urgent care. Thanks to the quick action of his foster home, Frankie will make a full recovery from his run-in with rodenticide, which is the most important thing. Not so good is the cost of following the procedure set out by poison control – the initial ER vet bill was $3360.28. Just three days before, Frankie underwent an extensive dental procedure with 13 extractions. His mouth was in horrible condition, and two further teeth which appear to have been previously fractured and healed over still need to be removed. We’re not telling Frankie that a second dental surgery has to be scheduled – we think he’s had enough of going to the vet for the time being!

This new fellow joined BTRC over the weekend. Sadly, he was being given away for free in a parking lot. A good Samaritan took him in, and a search found no other family that might be missing him. So BTRC has very little history, other than he is reportedly seven years of age, and appears to be a mix – Is it Pug? Chihuahua? Whatever the breed, Frankie has been blessed with a tail, and he certainly knows how to wag it!
Since Frankie acts like a young dog, we think the grey mixed into his brindle coat is due more to his genetic make-up than his age. Frankie is being fostered in the GTA, Ontario.
