We are pleased to announce that not only has Moxie found his forever family – that family includes her BTRC foster sibling Jack. Adopted together, it has made the transition to their new home even smoother. Congratulations to all!
Beauty Queen Moxie, you’ve stolen our hearts!
Moxie came to BTRC as a shelter transfer. As she had some medical concerns that warranted further investigation, it was felt that her best chance at getting the care needed was with BTRC. In a few short months, Moxie has not only recovered but has won us all over with her sweet disposition.
Moxie is a 24-pound, 7-year-old Boston Terrier mix. Loyal and well-behaved, she loves going for walks, exploring the outdoors and is quite happy to go on road trips in the car, particularly when the destination is fun like her foster family’s cottage! Moxie’s expressive amber eyes light up to let you know when she’s having a great time – even if it’s just enjoying one of life’s simple pleasures like basking in the sunshine.
While she may be past her puppy years – and puppy antics – Moxie still has plenty of energy and enthusiasm for life! In foster care, Moxie has mastered basic commands, such as sit, stay, and come. Very smart and eager to please, Moxie is delighted to learn new tricks and skills to add to her repertoire. Learning is not only fun and fantastic mental stimulation; it is quality time spent one-on-one with her person. Moxie would thrive in a forever home consistent with training and positive reinforcement. There’s no limit to the things she could accomplish; she would be an excellent candidate for Canine Good Citizen certification. (If you’re concerned about all the treats this training may cost you, not to worry – a few belly and butt rubs go a long way for Moxie!)
Not all of us would be as patient and tolerant as Moxie, and we could learn from her gentle disposition. Throughout the trial and error of identifying what was causing her skin irritation – and the many baths and treatments along the way – Moxie has not once shown any sign of displeasure, taking it all in stride. The dermatologist eventually determined that Moxie had Demodex, a common condition caused by microscopic mites. All dogs have a few of these mites on their skin, and they usually do not cause harm. In the case of Demodex, a rapid increase in the number of these mites causes symptoms such as red-inflamed skin, hair loss, and secondary infections. Non-contagious, Demodex is straightforward to treat, and we are happy to report that Moxie is now negative for mites. So with her sleek, white coat, Moxie is ready to shine!
As every beauty queen knows, good sleep is key, and Moxie loves to curl up in her foster family’s lap for a snuggle. An affectionate girl, Moxie will happily join you on the couch or bed for some quality relaxation time. Moxie is also happy in her crate and will curl up for some alone time when the mood suits her.
There was some concern that Moxie may be suffering from patellar luxation. After consulting with a veterinary orthopedic specialist, we’ve been advised that Moxie does not require patella surgery as her comfort and daily activity are not impacted at this time. This was great news, as Moxie loves her daily exercise, which keeps her mentally and physically stimulated. Adequate playtime and regular walks are important to Moxie – no need to do a marathon, even just a leisurely stroll at the end of the day will serve Moxie just fine!
Moxie is not a loud dog and could live in many different homes, including apartments. She does show some slight displeasure at being left behind, which is exhibited by whining, but she eventually settles. Still, Moxie would prefer someone who is home with her more often than not. Moxie has proven to be a great partner-in-crime with her fellow foster dog, a male Boston Terrier, but has not been tested around young children or cats. As she is such a mellow girl, we feel she could do well with older children, if they are gentle and introductions are handled appropriately.
Always a sweet and beautiful soul, with the help of her veterinary team and caring BTRC fosters, Moxie’s beauty is now reflected both inside and out. We are thrilled that Moxie is now ready to start her next chapter to find her forever home and steal more hearts!

We are pleased to share that things continue to improve for Miss Moxie!
Her vet says she “looks fantastic” and as you can see from her before and after photos, it is true! Moxie has been on a restricted diet for several weeks. Since her skin and itchiness are so much better, we’re now able to start a “food challenge” – introducing new food items one at a time to see if they cause any adverse reaction.
Moxie loves to travel to her foster dad’s trailer and bask in the sun. Moxie also likes to snuggle and go for walks. She has become more active and curious when she sees other dogs. She loves being outside, but if you ask her to step foot in the rain or cold, in the true spirit of a Boston, she will forgo the opportunity.
Good news, Moxie – it looks like sunshine is in the forecast for the next couple of months!
Moxie Update!
We are optimistic that sweet Moxie is finally on her way to finding relief from her increasingly raw and itchy skin!
Her appointment with a dermatologist specialist on March 8 revealed that Moxie is suffering from demodex, a bacterial skin infection and a residual ear infection. A treatment regimen is now in place, and we hope to see a marked improvement in a few weeks’ time.
Once these issues are resolved, and if she continues to itch, we’ll work on finding the source of any allergies.
Moxie is such a good girl! She is extremely tolerant of all the medications, treatments and baths needed to help make her comfortable. Because of the condition of her skin, Moxie’s wonderful foster home has provided her with quite the wardrobe of t-shirts – and as you can see from the video, she knows exactly which daily outfit she wants to wear!
Moxie has luxating patellas, so a referral to an orthopedic surgeon is also in her future.
Welcome Moxie
This unique and pretty Boston-mix came to us from the Ottawa Humane Society. She is approximately 7 years of age and 20 lbs. Described as the sweetest girl, kind and affectionate, Moxie has some medical issues that need to be addressed before she can find her forever home.
The OHS completed all routine vetting, including a dental, but Moxie will need a dermatology consult to address her ongoing skin issues which, despite medication and diet restrictions, continue to flare. She’ll also need to visit an orthopedic surgeon to assess bilateral patellar luxation. These specialists are outside the scope of the OHS’s ability to help, so we are proud to partner with them so dogs like Moxie get the extra care they need.
Her foster caregiver tells us that Moxie is settling well and is quick to pick up new routines. She’s also offering up lots of cuddles!
Moxie is being fostered in the Kitchener-Waterloo area of Ontario and is not yet ready for adoption.
