Shakira is Adopted!

Shakira was posted for adoption almost two months ago. Though her Boston Terrier title is an honourary one, this unique mix of BT and Shar Pei is a wonderful companion. But despite thousands of views, (thanks to all of you who shared!), this cute, well-behaved, affectionate girl generated very little interest.

Perhaps that was the way it was supposed to be, as her foster family realized that Shakira was already forever home. ❤️

Congratulations to Shakira, her BFF Boston brother, and of course, her humans too!

ADOPTABLE SHAKIRA!

Are you the perfect family for me?

I am a smart, agile, loveable honourary Boston terrier. The story goes that I’m a mix between Chinese Shar Pei and Boston. I don’t remember anything about my parent’s love story or how they met – I just think I’m perfect no matter who my parents or grandparents were and the humans I live with agree. Perfect through and through.

They have the best backyard ever! It has a really high fence around it with a gate that latches closed so I have my own protected area to run around and play. They have these BIG trees that I sometimes climb so I can make new friends with the squirrels. The squirrels haven’t really come around to be my friends yet, but I never give up, not even for a treat!

I used to have a few pee accidents and needed to wear a diaper in the house. How embarrassing! But my temp family never made me feel bad. They gave me great pats and said nice things to me when I made it outside before peeing. Lucky for me, I get to take some super tasty “treats” twice a day and now I don’t have any dribbles anymore. They tell me I’m going to get those treats every day, so I don’t have to wear the diapers anymore.

[Don’t tell Shakira, but those tasty treats are actually phenylpropanolamine (brand name Proin) a medication given daily to treat urinary incontinence due to poor muscle tone. While on this medication Shakira no longer has accidents so it will need to be continued. BTRC is presently purchasing this medication from an online pet pharmacy at a cost of $45.00 per month.]

My foster family says I need to practice on walks a bit more. They say we were not meant to be out hunting squirrels, rabbits or other small animals. I say they don’t understand fun. And besides, it’s not my fault those little things are so fast and look so tasty! I just wish I could get a bit closer, that’s all! I promised I wouldn’t eat them. My family tells me there are things called “cats” that I may or may not try to catch too. I don’t know, I’ve never seen one around here. I do have a BFF though! He IS a Boston terrier, and he’s much older and a bit slower than I am so I just make sure I’m careful when playing with him. He gets to decide how fast and long we go. I’m just so dang happy to be playing with him.

Speaking of fun, I love to run. It’s even better when I can dash out an open door all by myself! This one time my foster family was all chasing after me, calling my name, like a great game of tag! My foster family didn’t seem to enjoy this game as much as I did, though, so they’ve made it their mission to make sure I never sneak out an open door again. Bummer.

At nighttime, I feel the best when I get to go into my own crate with my own pillows and blankets. I curl up there and get a good night’s rest so in the morning I am rip-raring to go again! Playing is just so much fun!

So, now I’m looking for a place to call my fur-ever home. Do you have a place in your heart for me? I promise to be good! We can go on multiple walks a day together. I can play with you or your older kids all day long if you’ll let me! It sure would be awesome if you had someone else I could play with too. Maybe another honorary Boston, like me?

Sound like we could make a great family together?

SHAKIRA • SPAYED ADULT FEMALE MIX • 3 YEARS • 45 LBS • ACTIVE & STRONG! • DOG-FRIENDLY • KIDS 6+ • FOSTERED IN KINGSTON, ON

Please Note: We do allow out-of-province adoptions, but it is the responsibility of the adopter to travel to meet and pick-up their new family member – we do not ship our dogs. From the time applications are opened, through the selection and screening process, adoptions can take approximately three weeks to finalize. We thank everyone who takes the time to apply, but only those who best fit each dog’s requirements in a forever home will be contacted.

FASHIONABLE SHAKIRA

We strongly believe in a ‘decompression’ period when each new dog comes into rescue, so that they can be given the space and time they need to get comfortable in their new environment. The length of time varies from dog to dog, as some adjust more quickly than others, but on average things are taken pretty slow for the first couple of weeks.

BTRC foster Shakira has been using this time to binge-watch a documentary on the evolution of hip-hop, and to reflect upon her fashion choices.
You do you, Shakira!

INTRODUCING SHAKIRA

The name Shakira means grateful, which is fitting, as we know that this 3.5-year-old girl is grateful to be out of the shelter and in a caring foster home!

Shakira is reportedly an interesting mix of Boston Terrier and Shar Pei. Sadly, when one of her human companions passed away, it was not possible for the other to continue to care for her. She was surrendered to the shelter who in turn contacted BTRC, and she has been in her foster home since the weekend.

So far Shakira has been a polite and well-behaved houseguest. She does have a very strong prey drive though – so squirrels in the neighbourhood be warned! We do have a brief medical history from the shelter, so we’ll be following up with our rescue vet and will share more about this unique gal in the coming days.

Shakira is being fostered in the Kingston, ON area and is not yet ready to be considered for adoption.
