Darlah’s Story

UPDATE – Oct 18

Darlah continues to do well after her complicated dental surgery and the extraction of 14 teeth.

Darlah’s resilience is nothing short of inspiring – can you imagine how you’d feel after such an ordeal at your own dentist? Throughout the healing process, Darlah has remained her loving, affectionate self, eager for her foster dad’s companionship and attention.

At her recent recheck, the vet was very pleased with her progress. (And Darlah was very pleased that the delicious soft food was to continue for just a little bit longer!)

It won’t be long until Darlah will be ready to begin the search for her forever home. Because of your generous support, she will join all the other BTRC alum who have been able to go on to happy, healthy lives. If you haven’t yet, please consider donating to our 911 Medical Fundraiser to help offset the cost of surgery for dogs in need such as our Darling Darlah!

Darling Darlah was surrendered to rescue because of extensive dental issues her family could not afford to address.

DarlahBoston Terriers are prone to dental problems. Their short, broad heads and flat faces don’t leave a lot of space for 42 teeth!

Dental disease is more than just a cosmetic issue. In addition to causing inflammation, bad breath, tooth loss, and pain, bacteria that starts in the gums can work its way into the bloodstream and affect other organs. It was imperative that Darlah’s dental issues be addressed right away.

And extensive dental issues they certainly were! Her veterinarian told us that the condition of Darlah’s mouth was the worst he had seen in his veterinary career. Four fractured teeth and 14 teeth removed in total. Repair to the fibre around another tooth to save it.

Darlah’s liver enzymes were also slightly elevated, likely due to bacteria travelling from her mouth to her liver. Fortunately, it appears her surgery was completed before any other complications arose.

On antibiotics for infection and pain medication, Darlah handled her dental surgery like the champ she is! Arriving home, she trotted into her foster home like nothing had happened (aside from a little whining, probably an after effect from the anesthetic.) First order of business – bark at her nemesis, the squirrel!

Affectionate to a fault, Darlah’s generous kisses will now be so much sweeter! Worth every penny, the expense of Darlah’s surgery, and just under $2500, has taken a toll on our available funds. We hope our 911 Fundraiser can help us recoup some of the costs so that we have funds available for emergencies like Darlah’s.
