Ella was adopted on November 12, 2023.

It’s been one month since Ella was adopted and her forever family couldn’t be happier. She has been enjoying long walks, car rides and naps by the fire. Now an honorary member of her mom’s choir, Ella enjoys being spoiled by her fellow songsters. They adorn her with knitted scarves and Ella is eating it up (the attention, not the scarves 😂)!

We are so happy for Ella and her family. This update is music to our ears!

Detective Ella is on the hunt for her forever home!

This curious cutie came to BTRC because her family was not able to give her the attention she deserved. A very loved member of the family, the decision to surrender her was difficult. However, while in foster care, Ella has found the time to allow her inquisitive streak to flourish!

8-year-old Ella has a heart full of gratitude and lots of love to give. She can’t wait to meet her perfect match – someone who will provide her with cuddles, comfort, companionship and continued training. Gentle and affectionate, Ella thrives on human company and will eagerly snuggle for hours on end. Whether it’s a cozy evening on the couch or a lazy Sunday morning in bed, she is right there, bringing warmth and love to her humans.

Ella enjoys going for walks and exploring the world around her. She has good leash manners and happily accompanies her humans on strolls through the neighborhood or adventures in the park. She may not be the fastest on four legs, but she keeps a steady pace and makes every walk enjoyable.

Ella earned the title of “detective” because of her amazing ability to sniff out hidden food or toys. Though she tries to remain incognito during her undercover missions, she has been spotted table surfing for snacks or trying to eat her BT foster’s brother’s food when she thinks no one is looking. Her foster mom says these occasional bouts of mischief only add to her unique charm and ability to entertain. Ella’s manners have greatly improved during her time in foster care – table surfing was just an initial ‘meet the new foster family test’ to see how her detective skills would be received. 😉 Ella is an opportunist, though, so her family should be aware that she might attempt her ‘getting to know you’ test in her new home, especially when she’s learning the house rules!

Ella knows basic commands as well as some tricks. She is fully house and crate trained, microchipped, and has received all necessary vetting. She is a quick learner and easily adapts to new routines, as she always aims to be the best and most well-mannered companion she can be.

Ella has shown some resistance during veterinary exams. Though she is happy and calm before and after check-ups, during the actual exams or procedures, she becomes stressed. Muzzling her adds to her anxiousness, so she takes a calming medication to help. Fortunately, Ella’s recurring ear infections are now effectively managed with regular ear cleaning and a hypoallergenic diet; this is something her new family will need to continue.

While Ella gets along with humans of all ages, she does appreciate a more Zen environment, so a mellow, adult-only home or a home with dog-savvy older kids is ideal. Ella has only encountered one cat and though she didn’t get too close, her body language hinted that she is not a cat lover. She also has a strong prey drive, so backyard critters beware!

Ella also gets along well with her BT foster brother as most other dogs she meets. Sharing toys and items she considers to be of high value (like bones, toys, sticks and other random items), however, is something Ella still needs to work on. She must be carefully supervised if, in the company of another dog, she decides something is “hers.” Better yet, Ella has learned to enjoy these items only when she is on her own and in her own space; play time with her foster brother is toy-free. If a canine sibling is in Ella’s future, she would prefer a dog who is calm, well-mannered, respects her boundaries and enjoys the occasional play session. She also prefers they have the same energy level as her. Currently, her foster brother is a ball of energy and often when he wants to play, she would rather nap or snuggle.

Queen Ella is enjoying her time on the throne! 👑

Ella has been living a life of luxury in her foster home. Her days involve food, naps, walks, toys, playtime and cuddles – life can’t get any better! Ella enjoys being doted on and prefers to have her naps ON her humans – the chest, stomach and lap are all to her liking and she will happily nap there for as long as someone lets her. Belly rubs are a must for this courtly gal, and she will return the love with endless snuggles.

We are happy to report that Ella’s counter surfing days are over (well, as long as the royal guards are on duty 😉. Apparently, she feels this behaviour is unbecoming for her royal status. However, if something drops on the floor, Ella claims it is fair game. 😂 She has been enjoying her new hypoallergenic diet which will hopefully help with her ear infections. She needs to keep those ears perky so they can secure that crown squarely on her beautiful head!

Ella’s regality has not gotten to her head though. She is still very much connected to her canine roots and will cheerfully dig for treasures and fetch sticks. Her majesty also does not require private security. She insists on keeping watch for intruders – backyard critters are not welcome on palace grounds!

We wanted to interview Ella further, but she abruptly cut our interview short claiming she was tired and needed to return to her chamber. We did not want to argue with the queen, so that’s the end of our update!

Ella is being fostered in the Durham Region of Ontario and is not yet ready for adoption.

Ella the Detective!

Ella joined BTRC in May 2023 and has been an adorable bundle of energy in her foster home. Her foster brother, BTRC alum Cosmo, enjoys having a roommate with similar interests – mainly food, walks, suntanning and naps. He appreciates that Ella has an uncanny ability to sniff out where toys are hidden. She can also detect stray pieces of kibble that are invisible to the untrained eye…or nose. Her undercover operations include attempts at table-surfing and stealing confiscated goods (ie: toys she is unwilling to share).

Ella has great leash manners and she loves to show off her mastery of commands like “sit,” “come,” “drop it,” “paw” and “high five.” She is very happy and gentle with everyone she meets, welcoming snuggles and kisses from anyone who is willing. Her foster mom says, “She has the cutest little butt wiggles and jumps when she is happy to see you, especially first thing in the morning or when the kids come home from school.”

Ella’s ears and tummy were red when she came into BTRC’s care. She has since recovered from an ear infection and the skin redness has improved significantly. Ella enjoys being doted on. When ointment is applied to her stomach, she happily lays belly up with her eyes closed. Her foster dad (who Ella has claimed as her personal assistant) provides top-notch spa services that include nail trims, ear cleaning and baths. Ella is very patient during her pampering sessions. Currently, Ella is taking pain pills for a cracked nail. Thankfully, this has not dulled her energy and her desire to play!

Ella is being fostered in the Durham Region of Ontario and is not yet ready to be considered for adoption.

Introducing Ella!

Ella just recently arrived to BTRC and is now settling into her new digs.  She was surrendered to rescue because her family’s life circumstances changed and they could no longer provide her with the time and attention they knew she deserved.

Ella is 8 years old and has been described as a “little sweetheart” with a passion for chew toys. We look forward to getting to know more about this beautiful girl!
