Huey

Huey was adopted March 4, 2022

ADOPTABLE: Huey

Huey is a gorgeous 4-year-old ‘supersized’ male neutered Boston Terrier weighing 38 lbs. He is well-mannered, sweet and very snuggly. Fostered in the South Shore region of Nova Scotia Huey will make a loving, affectionate and loyal companion for one very lucky forever family. (Scroll above for more pics!)

Likes:

  • Blankets. Cuddling in blankets and a human trained to cover him up.
  • Sleeping in. With his human, in the human bed.
  • Long walks. While he’s a medium energy dog who will happily enjoy being a snuggly lump –miss too many daily walks and that playful/active side takes over!
  • Balls and playing tug. Fetch is fun too! (Well, the ‘you-throw’ part is fun. The ‘him-bringing-back’ is a work in progress!) And yes, Huey is an aggressive chewer like most Boston Terriers. No resource guarding of toys or food though.
  • The car. Doesn’t try to drive, tethered safely in the back seat is fine for Huey. Don’t really need to go any where either because as long as you’re together, looking out the windows while stationary, also fun.
  • Your companionship.
  • Counter surfing to enjoy expensive cheese. (Okay, it was just that once but he DID really like the cheese – to his own detriment!)

Dislikes:

  • Being left on his own. He would much prefer his person, or people, home most of time.
  • Too much excitement. Huey is a sensitive fellow who can be anxious of new things.
  • Other dogs. Well, perhaps dislike isn’t the exact word. More of a strong preference to be your one and only. If Huey spies another dog while out on a walk, you won’t have to run the other way or hide behind a tree. If he feels that another pooch is getting too close too fast, or is not respecting his personal space, he may give a warning growl or bark, but he is easy to redirect with treats. He can even be walked with other calm dogs. It is important to know, though, that when stressed in his previous home, he would become reactive and redirect towards the other resident dog. Which is a nice way of saying he would attack him.
  • Children. They are just too unpredictable, move too fast and frighten him. He could be reactive with the small child in his previous home, which is one of the main reasons his family, who loved him dearly, made the decision to surrender him to rescue.   Adults only for this boy.
  • Strangers who get in his space too quickly. This has improved with training and time, but his fosters still insist that Huey is allowed to approach new people first, rather rather than have new people reach out to Huey. This is a good practice with any dog. And once Huey decides to approach someone it doesn’t take him any time to warm up! He moves right to the kisses stage. Without shame.
  • People at the door. Okay, again, not really a dislike but one of the triggers that make him a bit anxious and bark. His fosters use a baby gate to keep him from the doorway, and when properly introduced, he’s become quite the social butterfly when new friends come to visit.

MUST-HAVES:

  • No young kids. Explained above.
  • No other dogs. Probably no cats either. While Huey doesn’t seem to have an overly strong prey drive, and doesn’t react to cats he sees on walks, we aren’t sure how this will translate in a home environment and would rather be safe than sorry with your favourite feline.
  • Patience. Huey is a sensitive boy and another move will undoubtedly have him worried at first. His new family will need to give him the opportunity to settle in at his own pace. His anxieties will reduce as he becomes more comfortable, and once he bonds he is your BFF forever.
  • Understanding. Huey is overall a very healthy fellow but does have food sensitivities. These are well-managed for the most part with a fish-based diet and no human food snacks. Ill-gotten gains like a block of stolen cheese will cause a flare-up and he has suffered ear infections as a result. BTRC has had him all checked out at the vet and will of course share how his allergies are managed and have been treated.
  • A good camera. Because come on – this Boston boy is too handsome not to share his pictures!

Hello Huey!

This four-year-old Boston is a whole lotta’ handsome – 40 lbs of handsome to be exact!

Huey is an anxious fellow, and that can translate to reactive behaviour around small children and other dogs. Despite working with a qualified trainer, Huey’s interactions with the family kids still had to be managed 24/7 for the safety of all. As much as he was loved – really, because of how much he was loved – it was decided that Huey would live a happier life in a home without children.

And BTRC will help him find just the perfect fit. For now, we’re just getting to know him and will share more as we learn more.

NOTE: Huey is being fostered in Nova Scotia and is not yet ready to be considered for adoption. BTRC DOES NOT MAINTAIN A WAITING LIST, SO NO APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AT THIS TIME.
