Jasper came to BTRC almost a year ago. Boomer joined BTRC eight months back. Both boys have been in foster care on medical holds since their respective arrivals.

This past week a wonderful thing happened. Both Jasper’s and Boomer’s foster families decided to make these deserving dogs permanent members of their families!

Jasper will forever be a “diaper dog”. His new mom has devised a top-notch management plan for his ongoing care. And don’t try and tell Jasper that there’s anything different about him – he’s a happy, playful, outgoing pup!

Boomer went through his own share of medical challenges, and has now been diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy. His foster-turned-adoptive mom has educated herself about living with a dog with seizures and has also worked out a care plan with our vet. Boomer is a silly guy, BFFs with his BTRC brother, and very happily settled into his forever home.

We are so grateful to both foster homes for the amazing care they have given these boys. We could not be happier to announce that Jasper and Boomer are now both officially ‘home’! 🏠❤️🐾

UPDATE JUNE 2021

Jasper came to BTRC last November at six months of age. Abandoned at a veterinarian’s office as a very young pup, rather than euthanize him, the vet performed surgery in an attempt to repair what was assumed to be a prolapsed anus. Either the tissue was too damaged, or he was born without an anus, because the corrective surgery was not a success. Jasper was left with combined fecal and urinary incontinence.

Jasper next went to a temporary home and somehow later ended up on kijiji. Without disclosing the truth about his condition, he was sold to a kind family who knew they couldn’t offer the specialized care his condition required.

Naturally, when he arrived at BTRC, our first thought was to find a “cure” for Jasper. A bionic bum would not be out of the question, should such a thing exist!

Options were explored with a series of specialist appointments. Neurologists, urologists, surgeons – and most recently, a consultation at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph.

We’ve accepted that a complete surgical solution is not possible, and that Jasper will always be incontinent, but the team at OVC does feel they can help! Jasper’s bladder appears normal on ultrasound, so surgery to shorten his prepuce will eliminate urine pooling and help to prevent future infections, irritation and swelling. His anal glands aren’t draining so their removal will prevent chronic inflammation, pain and itching. As Jasper is otherwise in great health, and there aren’t any neurological concerns, surgery has been tentatively scheduled for July. We have been quoted ~$6000.00.

In the meantime, Jasper continues to see a holistic vet for acupuncture and other supportive therapies. And we can’t praise his foster mom enough – she is diligent in providing his specialized care, while at the same time giving him the love, support and training every young dog needs.

It’s very important to point out that, while Jasper will always be a “diaper dog”, he knows nothing different. Jasper is playful, energetic and affectionate – and a bit saucy. He loves everyone he meets, and his happiness and zest for life are infectious!

While a bionic solution may not be realistic, we are committed to giving this “million dollar baby” a happy future and the best possible quality of life. Jasper’s vet bills to date total $5,280.17, not including his future holistic appointments and scheduled surgery.

“Giving is not just about making a donation. It’s about making a difference.”

Your generous support will truly make a difference in Jasper’s life!

Our little Jasper has had a difficult few days. 😞 Because he is incontinent, he needs to wear a combination of diaper and belly band, allowing this active puppy the freedom to roam and play around the house. But this also demands a special level of care from his foster home. Jasper is changed frequently so that he never spends time in a soiled diaper or belly band. He also enjoys “fresh air” time, which is the best thing for his skin.
Even with the utmost care being given, Jasper developed a stubborn urinary tract infection resistant to the normal treatment of antibiotics.
A specialist’s appointment including X-ray, another urine sample to identify the bacteria involved, and blood tests confirmed his UTI was the result of a congenital defect of his “man parts”, becoming more problematic as he gets older. Further antibiotics, probiotics and pain medications have our little boy feeling so much better. He’s back to playing his favourite game of ball – and, as you can see from the picture, even sleep can’t keep him from his bestest toy!
We are only treating the symptoms at this point, not the cause. Jasper will be evaluated by a neurologist to determine if there is a disruption of the nerves controlling his bladder, and a surgeon to see if his boy bits can be corrected. We are determined to help this happy, affectionate boy live his best possible life. ❤

Welcome Jasper!

Jasper is a 6 month old male Boston Terrier. His previous owners found him on Kijiji and fell in love with him. The family was told that he was recovering from rectal prolapse surgery, but that he was doing extremely well and it would just take time for him to heal. They reassured them that he would recover and that although he may need to be let out to go pee/poo more frequently, he would be fine.

Unfortunately, with a second opinion, they were given the news that Jasper was in fact born with a prolapsed anus and that it was bad enough that it had to be completely removed. Jasper will never be able to control his bowel movements, as he no longer has the muscle to contain his feces, nor does he get the sensation that he needs to go. The vet said that, when inside, he is a dog that will need to wear diapers for the remainder of his life.

His breeder brought him to the vet for surgery, and when they were told the outcome, abandoned him there. The vet still performed the procedure necessary to save this small puppy’s life, and then Jasper went to a temporary home and later ended up on kijiji, and, without disclosing the whole truth about his condition, was sold to this family. They then made the heartbreaking decision to surrender Jasper to us knowing we would find a perfect home for him.

Despite being through so much at such a young age, Jasper is a delightful pup. Sweet, affectionate, good with kids and other dogs. Other than his bum issue, he is described as the perfect pup!  Foster Mom says he loves to be outside, loves a patch of sunshine or the warmth of a fireplace, playing ball (fetch) and hiding his treats. Sweet, kind, loving and SUPER smart!

Jasper is going to require a home where his furever person/family will have time to spend with him (as he needs diaper changing throughout the day) and who can find it in their hearts to see past his unfortunate medical condition and give him all the love he deserves, just the way he is.

Stay tuned for updates on this sweet little guy.
