Adoptable Bru is waiting for you!

Need a new friend to bring joy and companionship into your life? Bru is an energetic and happy seven-year-old Boston Terrier who his foster dad describes as “the perfect buddy.”

Bru’s ideal environment is a blend of active and calm – just like Bru! A good day for fun-loving Bru would include lots of snuggles, a game or two of fetch, and some time to explore the outdoors together. Whether in the backyard or out on a walk, he prides himself on his squirrel patrol skills.

Though not overly vocal, Bru barks when appropriate – during play or to alert his humans to things he deems suspicious. 👀 He will, however, voice his displeasure when crated or confined but is fine left loose to lounge on the couch while his humans are away. Bru also loves to snooze in the human bed and will linger in the morning as long as you do. As a firm believer in the importance of rest, he knows that a good night’s sleep is the key to a happy and healthy day. Bru’s original family’s busy schedule left him frequently on his own, and he’d much rather spend his time with you.

Bru is healthy, house-trained, microchipped, and has received all necessary vetting. His mouth was in bad shape, but a series of dentals removed all the troublesome teeth, and regular oral care is now all that is needed. Bru also had a cardiology check-up, and although he does have mild degenerative mitral valve disease, not uncommon in dogs as they age, Bru has no symptoms, his heart is not enlarged and no medication or other treatment is needed at this time.

Bru used to live with kids so would be fine in a family with children 6 years of age or older. He has always been an only pet, but interactions with other dogs he has met on walks while in foster care have been positive. Though he gets excited at first, once acquainted he calms down and is happy to continue the walk side-by-side. Though we can’t predict for certain how he would do with another canine sibling, we believe that with proper introductions Bru could adjust to sharing his home with another well-behaved dog. Bru has never been around cats, although a dog-savvy feline might be okay too. If there is another furry friend in his new home, proper introductions and the ability to separate pets during their adjustment period would be necessary.

Dental number 2 for Bru!

Judging from his happy disposition, you wouldn’t know BTRC foster Bru has had sixteen teeth removed in the last two months. Last month, it was nine teeth, and during his most recent dental, it was seven. Next month, he will lose six to seven more. His foster dad says his attitude and energy are still at an all-time high, and Bru continues to be the best boy he can be.

It’s obvious Bru’s mouth was in bad shape when he came into foster care. With plaque and tartar buildup, gum recession from bacterial infection, and many loose and rotated teeth, Bru’s mouth was stinky and painful. And dog dental disease can have serious consequences for overall health.

It’s been a process, but after his final procedure next month, Bru’s mouth will be in top-top shape – a relief for Bru, and for the lucky recipients of his many kisses 😂!

Bru’s first dental cost $2278.86; the most recent $1921.56, for a total of $4200.42. If you would like to donate to Bru’s next dental and help him achieve a beautiful BTRC smile, please consider donating at: https://www.bostonterrierrescuecanada.com/donate/

One dental down, two more to go!

BTRC foster Bru has given new meaning to the term “million-dollar smile.” At his most recent dental procedure, he had nine teeth removed, but still has fourteen more to go – twenty-three teeth in total!

Many of Bru’s teeth are loose or completely rotated, and he has quite a bit of gum recession. The condition of Bru’s mouth likely means he’s been living with constant pain, so we are anxious to get his mouth in tip-top shape.

Bru’s initial exam found that he had a heart murmur. Before we could schedule a dental procedure, we needed to investigate his heart issues further to make sure he could safely undergo anesthesia. A trip to the veterinary cardiologist found that Bru has degenerative mitral valve disease. It is mild, his heart size is completely normal, and he doesn’t need any medication. So there was no added risk to putting him under to fix his mouth.

Two more dental procedures are needed for Bru – one later this month for the left side of his mouth and one in April for the right. Luckily for Bru, he loves socializing at the vet and the clinic staff loves him right back! His friendly and outgoing nature makes him ready to take on anything that comes his way – as long as there is a treat waiting for him in the end. 😉

Bru has made a new buddy!

BTRC foster Bru enjoys taking a stroll around his neighbourhood each day, so he decided to invite BTRC alum Maggie along and show her all the best pee spots in town. Bru doesn’t live with another dog, so his dad arranged a meet and greet for some canine social time.

Bru’s human interactions are full of excitement too and he starts each day determined to be the best boy he can be. He takes his job as his foster dad’s alarm clock very seriously – no sounds, just a face full of kisses! After he wakes dad up, he immediately burrows under the blankets for a short nap (apparently being an alarm clock is exhausting 😉).

Among Bru’s favourite things are visits to his foster grandparents’ golf course where he darts around the snow-covered field. His foster dad takes him on three walks a day, but he’s still a bundle of energy at home and wants to play, play, play!

Snacks also have a special place in Bru’s heart as he barely blinks when food is being prepared. Along with being an alarm clock, Bru has also appointed himself as the vacuum. However, he’s pretty disappointed that his foster dad isn’t very messy – it seems like crumb catching is not a lucrative job in his foster home! 😂

Bru, we are impressed – you are a jack of all trades. Alarm clock, vacuum – but most of all, good boy. ❤

Bru is being fostered in Ottawa, ON. Bru has an appointment with a cardiology specialist in the near future, so is not yet ready to be considered for adoption.

Dear Santa Paws,

My name is Bru, but I’m pretty sure you already know that because you’ve visited me before. I am in a new home now, so I thought I’d write to let you know.

I’m still a good boy just like last year, so you can keep me on your ‘nice’ list. When I was a puppy, I used to have a huge list of toys I wanted you to bring me, but now that I’m older, I’m starting to appreciate other things. Like my foster grandparents’ huge backyard where I run after squirrels. Or the weekend nature walks my foster dad takes me on. And snow – I love snow! Plus, my foster dad takes me to the pet store for toys, so I don’t need your elves to make those for me – save those for the puppies.

I went to the vet and they said I have a heart murmur. Now I gotta visit a special doctor called a cardiologist. I asked my dad if my heart murmur is my fault because I love so big and so hard. Maybe if I stopped doing this, my heart would beat normally? He said this is not my fault and that I should continue to love just as big and just as hard because that is what makes me so special. So, Santa, for Christmas all I ask for is the gift of strength and courage. I think these things will help me a lot.

Thanks, Santa, for visiting me year after year. I don’t understand why some dogs don’t believe in you. You’ve always got my back. ❤

Love, Bru

Lookin’ good, Bru!

Our bouncy boy Bru is full of energy and is enjoying many new experiences. His foster dad decided to do some glamour shots and, as you can see, Bru is a natural in front of the camera. We couldn’t decide on his best angle and the verdict is – all sides are his best side! When we asked Bru how he was feeling after his photoshoot he said, “Tired. It is exhausting being this handsome.” 😂🥰

When he isn’t modelling, Bru loves leading the way on his walks, eager to investigate the new sights, sounds and smells of the nation’s capital. He has met many new friends, both human and canine during his outdoor excursions.

As much as he enjoys his time outdoors, he also loves his snuggle time indoors. You will often find him nestled against his foster dad or chilling with his favourite pig toy. He enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner with his foster dad but was not impressed that his meal did not include any table scraps. We explained to him that if he has a modelling career in his future, he needs to stay trim and stick to a healthy dog diet.

Bru has some vet appointments coming up, but for now, he’s just going to enjoy his full-time job of being handsome.

BTRC welcomes our new buddy, Bru!

Recently arrived, this handsome 7-year-old boy is getting acquainted with his foster dad and exploring his new digs. Bru was a treasured member of his family, but due to unforeseen circumstances, they were no longer able to give him the time and attention he deserved. As much as it hurt, Bru’s family believed it was best to find him a new home and knew that BTRC would do just that.

So far, what we know about Bru is that he is a laid-back and sweet boy. He enjoys walks and takes his role as ‘Squirrel Patrol’ very seriously. We look forward to getting to know him better as he’s given the chance to settle in.
