Tucker

IT’S NOT GOODBYE – IT’S SEE YOU LATER

We were heartbroken to learn that BTRC alum Tucker lost his battle with leukemia. This handsome, happy fellow never met a stranger and had amassed a big circle of admirers and friends. Some people believe that dogs somehow find exactly where they were meant to be, that there’s a power stronger than we can understand helping them make their way ‘home’. This was certainly the case with Tucker, a dog from Ontario who found both his person and his passion on the East Coast.

There are no words better to pay tribute to Tucker than those of his mom:

“In loving memory of our dear Tucker, who brought boundless joy and love into our lives during his two years with us.

He was more than a pet; he was a faithful adventurer and a loving companion. He fearlessly climbed the rugged mountains of Cape Breton Highlands, his spirit as wild and untamed as the landscape he explored.

His heart truly belonged to the ocean, where he found pure bliss in every wave. His eyes would light up with a special gleam, and his playful antics in the water were a sight to behold.

This furry friend was particular, yes, but his love was unconditional. He thrived on companionship, and he never wanted to be alone. He was your constant shadow, following you on every journey, sharing every adventure, and filling every moment with warmth and love.

He had an undeniable weakness for food and snacks, and the way his eyes sparkled at the mere mention of a treat is a memory that will forever be etched in our hearts. Belly rubs were his ultimate delight, and he would melt into pure contentment beneath your gentle touch.

Mornings were his favorite time, and he cherished those moments when he could sleep in, wrapped in a cocoon of warmth and love.

Though he is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in the memories we hold dear. Every mountain we climb, every ocean wave we touch, every snack we savor, and every belly rub we give will be in his honor.

Rest in peace, my baby Tucker. You are deeply missed, and your memory will forever bring smiles and tears to our hearts. 20 years would still not be enough time with you. ❤”

ADOPTION TIME FOR “TUCKER”!

Tucker is a mature, reserved gentleman who likes to relax in the sun, go for walks and play games. He enjoys car rides and loves wrapping in blankets to “watch tv in the evening”.

This seven-year-old charmer weighs 30 pounds, and DNA testing has revealed that while his primary breed is Boston Terrier, Tucker has some Bulldog and Boxer ancestors in his family tree.

The term “tuck” is slang for food, so this boy is aptly named! He is very food motivated and is always eager for food or a treat. He particularly enjoys the mental challenge of toys containing snacks!

Thanks to the work of his dedicated fosters, Tucker now walks nicely in harness on a leash for 2-3 kms twice each day. He is not reactive to other dogs he meets. Although Tucker has been an only dog in his foster home, he did live with a similar-sized dog in his prior home and should do fine with another laid-back canine companion.

Tucker is a quick learner and picks up new commands easily. He would be happy to be on the furniture but stays off if asked. He is not a door dasher and is well-behaved in the fenced yard, doesn’t dig and stays out of the garden. But he is eager to “help” you water with the hose.

Tucker plays nicely with toys and does not resource guard toys or food. He can get excited while playing or when his fosters return home, but a calm handler can diffuse the situation.

Tucker does have separation anxiety. He and his foster caregivers have been working hard on overcoming his fear of being left on his own and have progressed well – Tucker can now be left alone for short stretches (30- 90 minutes) in his crate. It is important to note that his separation anxiety will be a continued work in progress in his new home, incorporating tools such as the Adaptil pheromone collar and desensitizing training.

Despite his recent multiple dental extractions, he is otherwise a healthy boy who should enjoy many more years with a quiet couple who are home more than away.

Bottom line – Tucker is a very good boy! And his foster agrees: “He is truly a pleasure to have in our home and will make someone a great companion.”

Tucker’s ideal match would be with someone who was home with him more often than not – he’s also a great travelling buddy and would love to join you on road trips and pet-friendly vacations. He has lived with children, but a calmer environment without a lot of coming and going really suits him best.

Introducing Tucker!

This happy and friendly 7-year-old Boston Terrier mix has recently joined the BTRC family. We think Tucker is a mix of Boston and bulldog – we do know for sure he is 100% adorable!

Tucker came to Rescue because his family’s busy lifestyle meant it was difficult for them to provide the attention he required. Tucker suffers from separation anxiety and working through this issue does take time, dedication and consistency. Tucker was a much-loved family member, and this decision was not an easy one, but it was made with Tucker’s best interests at heart.

Tucker is settling into his foster home, where work will begin on calming his distress when left alone. He’ll have a full vet checkup too – his smile is winning but his breath not so much! We’ll keep you updated on his progress.

NOTE: Tucker is being fostered in Northumberland County, ON and is still being assessed so he is not yet ready for adoption. Social media followers will be the first to know when he is ready to find his forever home!
