Linus is home for Christmas!
In early November, Linus moved into a “foster-to-adopt” home. Linus had experienced some tummy issues in his original foster home, and we wanted to be sure that these were resolved before he left rescue’s care.
The good news is that Linus is doing very well. The great news is that his adoption is now official!

What does
Foster-to-Adopt mean?
Although the word foster is used, make no mistake – BTRC is looking for a FOREVER home for this dog. The only difference from a regular adoption is that, at first, the dog will remain as a BTRC foster.
Why?
There are two main reasons BTRC chooses to place a dog in a foster-to-adopt home:
- Vetting Needed: With the current challenges in booking appointments, that might be as far as a month or two away. Those extra weeks would be much better spent getting settled in a forever home. Or the dog needs some follow-up care for a condition that has already been treated. As BTRC pays all pre-approved veterinary bills, the dog officially remains a foster until the required medical care is completed.
- Training Needed: While a foster home can introduce the basics, and get a dog started on a plan to address unwanted behaviours, the best way to success is through the teamwork of dog and adopter. Training is a fantastic way to bond with your new dog, and a large part of behavioural rehabilitation focuses on teaching the human too! Again, BTRC offers support and covers the financial cost, so the dog remains a BTRC foster until training courses are completed.
FOSTER-TO-ADOPT: LINUS
Little Linus has come a long way during his time in foster care. Once a scared little man, this pup has gained confidence and a voice. Linus has become very fond of his foster family, enjoying lots of one-on-one attention. You’ll find him close by, laying on his people’s feet or right beside them. His two favourite things, in no particular order, are gnawing on his chewie and snuggling.
Much like the character he is named after, Linus seeks security, but his security comes from his person rather than from a blue blanket. Cartoon Linus is Charlie Brown’s best friend; BTRC’s Linus is hoping to be yours!
One-year-old Linus has made many strides in his learning and development. He loves playtime with his foster siblings, and although he is known to give them some chase, would likely be fine with a dog-savvy cat companion. Linus still needs more time to perfect his potty training and to understand that alone time in his crate does not mean his humans have abandoned him forever. Linus likes to be accompanied while out in the yard, and he makes it vocally known that he doesn’t like being away from his people. This tendency to talk when left alone means, like Snoopy, he’d be better living in a detached house.
Linus has been with rescue for several months because since his arrival he has experienced gastrointestinal issues with frequent vomiting. Medically, Linus has been tested and treated (outlined in more detail below), and his condition has greatly improved. We also suspect there is an emotional aspect to his tummy troubles: the less anxious Linus is, the less he vomits. We feel that a quiet environment where Linus is rarely left alone will help even more, so for this reason we are looking to place him in a foster-to-adopt home where his condition can continue to be monitored as he settles in with his new family.
Linus loves to play and would do well with a canine sibling who can help teach him the ropes of transitioning from teenager to adult. While he can still be a bit timid when meeting new dogs and new people, with the right introductions, Linus warms up and becomes a loving and happy companion. Since he is a sensitive fellow and kids can be unpredictable, an adult home would be most comfortable for Linus.

Note: From the time applications are opened, through the selection and screening process, foster-to-adopt arrangements are the same as regular adoptions and can take approximately three weeks to finalize. Linus is loving life at the lake!
BTRC Foster Linus is enjoying his time at his foster family’s cottage. New sights, sounds and smells are keeping his eyes, ears and nose busy! Linus doesn’t mind the car ride to the cottage, but he much prefers his travels be on the water. He is a happy companion on the boat and is working towards the title of Captain (apparently Second Mate isn’t good enough for Linus 😂). ⛵
Linus loves his close knit crowd and has found his sweet spot cradled in his foster dad’s arms. He spends most of his days sunbathing and playing with his BT foster siblings. He also likes to engage in a good zoomies session to keep everyone on their toes!
With the amount of energy that Linus exudes, one would never guess that he was experiencing tummy troubles. Linus was prescribed a special gastrointestinal diet, antacids and anti-nausea medication, but he was still throwing up. More tests were needed.
First, lab tests confirmed he did not have pancreatitis. A series of x-rays was taken, and while megaesophagus and brachycephalic airway disease were ruled out, the x-rays did reveal that Linus was experiencing delayed gastric emptying, meaning food was not moving through his stomach like it should. Next, an endoscopy was performed to better examine his esophagus and stomach. This procedure included a biopsy, and the eventual diagnosis was inflammation of the stomach and small intestine, with a suspected helicobacter infection.
Helicobacter is a very common bacteria, found even in healthy dogs. Most dogs do not suffer any symptoms and while the reason is not fully understood, for some dogs, like Linus, the infection causes gastrointestinal upset. To treat this Linus received what is called “triple therapy” – administering two antibiotics plus a medication to decrease acid in his stomach. Linus (and his gut) have responded well to this therapy!
Through all his tests and treatments, both Linus and his amazing foster family have been patient and have never complained. Although his journey has been a long one, Linus is well on his way recovery and a forever home.❤

BTRC Foster Linus has a new nickname – Lovebug Linus!
Linus continues to be full of snuggles for his foster parents and siblings both human and canine (the feline fosters siblings are a different story, however 😼). Linus arrived in foster care as a timid pup and now his big personality is shining through. Rumour has it that he is even a little bossy. 💪 He is gaining confidence and discovering what the life of a dog truly entails – treats, toys, snuggles, walks, naps…and watching tv!
Linus has chosen his foster dad as his person. If his foster dad steps out, Linus will loyally wait by the door for his return. When we told Linus it is not polite to pick favourites, he responded with, “Sorry, but I’m a one-man dog.” Guess Linus isn’t the type to play the field. 😂
While we all know it’s not uncommon for a healthy dog to throw up occasionally, and it’s usually nothing to worry about – maybe they ate too fast, snacked on too much grass or gobbled up something else that disagreed with them – Linus has been vomiting more often than could be considered ‘normal’. A vet visit was in order. Tests were run, pancreatitis was ruled out, so Linus has been prescribed a special gastrointestinal diet, antacids and antinausea medication. Our fingers are crossed for Linus’s tummy troubles!

Linus has some warm and fuzzy dreams for the future!
BTRC Foster Linus has figured out what he wants to be when he grows up – a Professional Foot Warmer! His favourite place to sleep is near his foster parents’ feet. No need for slippers because Linus keep those toes very cozy! It’s no wonder why his foster mom calls him a “snuggly little bundle of joy.”
Since being in foster care, Linus has made many great strides! He plays well with his foster siblings and enjoys snuggling with them. He is the master of the snuffle mat. With his not-so-smushed nose, he quickly finds those treats! He has learned some basic commands and has become less vocal when crated. He has also agreed to share his humans with the other dogs (though he still grumbles under his breath sometimes 🙄).
House-training has improved, though Linus still prefers to be escorted outside when he wants to use the “facilities.” We have a feeling this is Linus’s last-ditch attempt to get some extra unshared time with his foster parents 😂.

BTRC welcomes beautiful brown Boston Terrier, Linus!
At 6-months of age, Linus is still learning how to “dog” and he is in the perfect place with four other BT foster siblings! So far, what we have learned about Linus is that he loves his foster parents – so much that he would prefer to have them all to himself and doesn’t understand why he must share them with his siblings. Though we don’t promote his monopolizing of parental attention, we do know his foster parents are pretty awesome, so we understand why he is so smitten with them!
Because of his age, Linus has some time before his neuter, so he is currently getting acquainted with his canine and feline foster siblings.
