Oscar is Ready for Adoption!

Meet Oscar, the playful and affectionate 2-year-old brown and white Boston Terrier with an expressive little tail. This charming, confident, and soulful-eyed pup is eager to find a loving forever home where he can continue to work on his manners, his nearly perfect house training, his amazing snuggles… and his mischief.

Oscar is an escape artist so a fenced yard with a securely locked gate would be preferred. He has also expertly developed the ability to free himself from lift-latch crates and exercise pens, so he needs something a little more secure for his safety while you’re away from home. He can sometime exhibit some slight separation anxiety when left on his own (whining, barking) – most especially when he is adjusting to a change in routine. Once Oscar is comfortable and knows what to expect, he settles much more quickly. His adopter must be prepared to work through this, so it may be best that Oscar’s new family resides in a detached home.

Being the good boy that he is, Oscar contributes to household chores. For example, he will pick up socks from the floor, your laundry basket, and even right from your hand if you’re not fast enough with donning a pair. The look of pride as he shows off his efforts – and then bolts – is a sight to behold. Oscar also likes to find all the little bits to tidy up as well, like something dropped on the floor or a Kleenex that is partially hanging out of the side of a bin. He was once known to tidy up a whole bag of treats and can navigate chairs and the top of tables if he’s feeling snackish and on the hunt! Oscar will occasionally pull something from the recycle bag if he thinks it isn’t in small enough pieces for proper processing. He has tried to convince his foster family that he’s just trying to do his part.

Admittedly, he will sometimes contribute to the mess, by de-stuffing a toy to kill the squeaker. He is getting much better with “leave it” and “drop it” commands. Although he still exhibits some puppy behaviour Oscar is a quick learner and eager to please. He responds well to both treats (which he takes so gently) and high praise. The right home for Oscar will be one that continues his training using positive reinforcement training techniques. Aside from the obvious benefits of a well-trained pup, it’s a fun and rewarding way to build an even stronger bond!

Oscar is a friendly and sociable pup who gets along well with everyone he meets. First meetings with other dogs may include some boundary testing (especially if any food is nearby) and meeting anyone new may cause some over-excitement. When Oscar first arrived at his foster home, he was a bit nippy as he easily became over-stimulated; this has lessened immensely. Still, should a child hold a toy above his head, he may have difficulty restraining his eagerness. As such, he will do best with older children who understand their role in helping Oscar learn.

Given proper introductions, of course, Oscar would do well with another playful dog who isn’t easily offended by a brother who at times can be a bit pushy. Aside from having a BFF, a canine companion can help show Oscar the ropes as he gets used to the routines and expectations in his new home.

Oscar’s only known exposure to cats is a 16-year-old who did not welcome his proximity and vocal invitations to play, so Oscar may do better in either a cat-free home or with a dog-savvy cat.

Oscar is a most excellent snuggler. He enjoys being close to people, resting his head on an arm, chest, or even on your neck. He’s joined his Boston Terrier foster brother at night, sleeping in the human bed with his foster family, and like most Bostons he enjoys being close and under the covers – sometimes even with his head on a pillow! While he would love this arrangement to continue in his new home, he will also sleep in his kennel where he likes to burrow himself into his blanket and snuggle up with his stuffy. When Oscar is settling down, he likes to have a stuffy to suck on, and it’s adorable.

Oscar is sure to bring lots of love, laughter, and joy to his new family. With patience and training, Oscar can become the well-mannered, light-hearted, affectionate and entertaining companion you’ve always dreamed of.

Note: From the time applications are opened, through the selection and screening process, adoptions can take approximately three weeks to finalize. Foster pup Oscar hopes you all enjoy a lovely weekend filled with your favourite things. As temperatures are cold across most of the country, outdoor activities aren’t high on Oscar’s agenda. Cuddles, treats and naps top his list!
