The cone is off for Romeo!

We are happy to report that Romeo has recovered from his recent cryptorchid neuter and BOAS (brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome) surgery. You might recall that, during the procedure, a growth was found in the back of his throat. This was removed and sent for testing. Fortunately, it was found to be a non-cancerous “fibro mucosal” polyp, and no further treatment is required.

Speaking of removals, Romeo was much more pumped about another one – the removal of his cone! Playtime, mealtime and snuggle time are now even better.

Romeo is an energetic boy and loves his toys – even though they seem to spontaneously combust. It’s common to see Romeo standing in the middle of the room, fluff everywhere, with a look of pride on his face! His enthusiasm is not just for indoor play, however, as this boy likes to walk. He fairs well on a leash, but his curiosity and excitement often get the best of him, so his foster dad is working on how Romeo reacts to animals he encounters on his walks.

As much as Romeo loves to be active, he also appreciates his downtime and enjoys the serenity of his crate and a peaceful nap as he waits for his foster parents to return home. Romeo recently discovered the joys of technology while lounging on the couch with his foster dad—he can’t get enough doggy videos on the iPad!

We feel like Romeo has what it takes to be screen-worthy, too – so we will be sure to update you on this handsome boy soon!

Romeo catches some after-surgery rays…

and some time relaxing in the sunshine is well deserved! Brave Romeo had not one but two surgical procedures on the very same day.

Romeo was a “cryptorchid,” meaning he had one undescended testicle. First, an abdominal ultrasound was performed to determine its exact location. It was also suspected that Romeo would require surgery to improve his breathing, so X-rays were also taken, and an airway examination completed under anesthesia.

Both the neuter and the BOAS (brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome) procedures were completed successfully, and Romeo is recovering nicely. However, the surgeon did discover a cyst in Romeo’s airway, which was sent out for testing. Hopefully, it will be nothing to worry about, and no further treatment will be required.

Though a little unsteady on his feet, Romeo returned home ready for some R&R. Although he was a little bruised and swollen, Romeo’s appetite quickly returned to normal – he wasn’t even phased by the mushy kibble his foster dad served up, required as his throat heals. As he enjoyed the sunny outdoors, Romeo also discovered that his cone was a multifunctional accessory – both wound protector and sun visor! 🌞

Total cost of Romeo’s surgeries: $5,657.06

Welcome Romeo!

Romeo has arrived just in time for Valentine’s Day! Though he may have a ‘bad boy’ image, this 11-month-old knows how to work those puppy dog eyes and isn’t afraid to let his sweet side show.

Seriously, of course, Romeo is NOT a bad boy at all. He is, however, in need of some training and socialization that his previous family could not provide, given a lifestyle change that reduced the amount of time they could spend with him. They knew it was best for Romeo to get started on his training while still young, and BTRC was here to help.

It’s early days, so Romeo is still decompressing, and we’re still assessing. He needs to be neutered too. We’ll be updating you on this handsome fellow as we learn more.

Romeo is being fostered in the Peterborough, ON area and is not yet ready for adoption.
