ADOPTED: Shelby

Shelby was adopted on Jan 29, 2021

Look who’s ready for his new home!

If you could place your order for a rescued Boston terrier, a very good boy please, and then you decided to “upsize” your order… you’d get Shelby, 42 pounds of Boston awesome!

Shelby is a great dog. Described by his foster parents as “respectful, calm, obedient and loyal”, he quickly became fast friends with his foster dad. Although he does seem to gravitate more quickly to other ‘boys’, he is also affectionate with the ladies, and gives his foster mom lots of kisses.

Shelby is wonderful with puppies and small dogs but can be a bit defensive with dogs bigger than him. His foster sibling, a pug cross, is about one-quarter of Shelby’s size, and they get along great. He has not been tested with cats but doesn’t seem overly concerned when he views them through the window.

Shelby’s dog bed is in his crate, and he goes there on his own for afternoon naps and to sleep at night. He doesn’t go on furniture, but does like to be close at your feet when you’re relaxing on the couch.

A well-mannered fellow, Shelby understands sit, down, stay and no. He will bark and run to the door if he hears someone knock, but is learning to calmly sit and wait to see who is visiting. He just loves going for walks, and is good on the leash, although he will pull when he sees other dogs – or that great Boston nemesis – the squirrel!

Being such a gentleman, Shelby doesn’t demand that his humans play with him, although he’s not against a fun game of soccer or a round of fetch. Like many Bostons, he can be tough on his toys. His fosters have also been making some puzzle games for him to play with hidden treats. Using problem-solving skills keeps Shelby mentally active, just as his three daily walks keep him physically active.

Shelby had some health concerns when he arrived to Rescue, but has been fully vetted, including a dental, and is now healthy and ready to find his forever home.

If you are looking for a calm, well-behaved companion, then Shelby is your boy!

SHELBY IS LOCATED IN YORK REGION, ONTARIO • 7 YRS • FULLY VETTED • HOUSE- AND CRATE-TRAINED

Welcome Shelby!
This handsome chunk of a boy has recently come into BTRC’s care. At 44 pounds, Shelby is certainly a big Boston Terrier – but he’s not overweight. Just big boned!
Sweet-natured and laid-back, 6-year-old Shelby has some medical issues with his eyes and with some lumps on his face. His owners made the difficult decision to surrender him to rescue so that he could get the veterinary attention he needs.
Of most immediate concern was a growth underneath his eye. He was quickly scheduled at the vet’s, where this was diagnosed as an eyelid margin mass. Sadly, it was also discovered that Shelby has a corneal ulcer in his other eye.
Both eyes are being treated with a combination of medications and we are already seeing improvement. He is scheduled for a consultation on surgical removal of the eyelid mass.
The lumps in his cheeks are swollen lymph nodes. A fine needle aspiration shows no cancerous cells, which is great news. For now, Shelby is taking some antibiotics to see if the swelling will decrease.
He’ll also need a dental down the road, but for now, we’re happy to report that his most urgent health concerns are being addressed, and things are looking positive.
Personality-wise, Shelby has been great! Sweet and gentle, he is friendly to all – people and other dogs alike. He loves his walks, and his foster mom is introducing him to some doggie games to keep him occupied and encourage play. He’s really taken a shine to his foster dad, too, and happily snoozes in his office during work hours.
Shelby is being fostered in the Toronto area and is not yet ready for adoption. We will keep you posted on this new addition to our foster family!
