They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. And in response to Yara’s pictures, we can already hear them loud and clear: OMG! Puppy! Cute! Love! Adorable! Want! 😄

Yara, born in February of this year, is pretty much your typical Boston Terrier adolescent. Just like a human teenager, she is motivated to do “more”. More exploration, more curiosity, more play, and more interaction.

Yara is learning that not all dogs share her need for constant play. And that the resident cat isn’t interested in playing with her at all. Yara is very energetic, and her lucky adopter will need to be sure they can meet both her physical and behavioural needs, with plenty of exercise, and by helping her focus her energy on structured play like puzzle games and continued positive-reinforcement training.

Yara is bright and has enjoyed adding to her repertoire of basic commands. Yara will need work to continue to improve her leash skills, as she will bark and lunge on walks. She can be leery of strangers outside the home, and is not overly fond of vet visits, especially when they include the dreaded nail trim. She is about 90% house-trained, but still has the occasional accident. A consistent feeding/walking schedule helps to keep her on track. She is crate-trained and sleeps in her crate at night but does exhibit some separation anxiety when left on her own, howling and crying. There has been a lot of improvement in this area, and we’re sure it can be successfully overcome, but nearby neighbours may not enjoy the process!

We joke that young dogs have two speeds: full and off. Yara also has a “cuddle” setting! She’ll snuggle up with you for a nap, and a favourite part of her morning routine is to get in the human bed to cozy in until it’s time to start the day. She’s a very loving gal.

Fully vetted, Yara will be a great match for someone willing to take on the challenges of training a young dog. She has not lived with kids, but because of her ‘enthusiasm’, we feel older children would be best. A fenced yard would be ideal to allow her to safely expend some pent-up energy. A canine companion would need to share her energy level and love of play. She will pester a resident feline so a no-cat home would be preferred.

Welcome Yara!

When a new dog arrives at BTRC, we do our best to introduce them with a post that is honest, transparent, and hopefully maybe even a little entertaining.

With Yara, however, we’re pretty sure that whatever we write, all most will see is blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah CUTE blah, blah, blah, blah, PUPPY blah, blah, blah, blah IN RESCUE! 😉😂

Yes, this adorable bundle of energy is just six months old. How easy it is to forget how much work puppies are! That, and the fact that Yara may have gotten into something she shouldn’t have – which resulted in a costly vet visit – combined to make her owner realize that an active, inquisitive puppy was not the right fit for them. And we respect that decision. We are grateful they chose to surrender her to BTRC, where we can find her the right forever home.

Newly arrived, Yara has a vet visit scheduled, so we shall share more as we learn more.
