Nico

We are saddened to learn of the passing of BTRC alum Nico, adopted in 2015. We send our sincere condolences to John F. and to all who knew and loved Nico. Thank you for cherishing your “little prince” and giving him such a wonderful life.

Run free and healthy at the Rainbow Bridge Nico. 🌈

Adopted May 7, 2015

Head cocked to the side, his expression wide-eyed and curious, nothing compares with the cuteness of Nico. Even his larger-than-life ears are always perked and alert, making him a most effective Boston watchdog.

Nifty Nico has three favourite pastimes: fetching, cuddling, and burrowing. Throw him a ball and he’ll follow it anywhere; show him a lap and he’ll eagerly fill it; pile up some blankets and he’ll snuggle beneath them. A lover of both people and other dogs (he’s not yet been exposed to children or cats), he’s particularly patient with his younger, smaller foster sister, and much prefers a calm and quiet environment to a loud and hectic one. No shouting or arm flailing, hula hoops or skipping ropes near this sensitive soul. The result? Nico will demonstrate his displeasure by barking. Otherwise, he’s very well mannered, only chews bones and antlers, never furniture, and being treat motivated, knows to “shake a paw” and how to hold a “sit” until “okay” releases him.

Both house and crate trained, the time he spends in his crate varies according to his fosters’ work schedules, but he’ll remain there, usually dozing off, until their return. Because neither he nor his foster sib has really learned how to share, they require some supervision whenever the toys come out.

Not a great fan of winter, Nico spent most of it inside, only exiting the house to potty. But to keep him mentally and physically stimulated, his foster mom played “hide and seek” with him – a game he adored! Now that the snow has melted, “mom” and Nico are making up for lost time, going for long walks every day (always using a harness and nylon leash).

He seems to have some food sensitivities, and as his current regimen seems promising, it’s recommended that he continue on it in his forever home. And since nice Nico adapts easily to change, this amiable American Gentleman will thrive wherever he goes – provided no turmoil or turbulence is involved.
